Pitt McGehee Palmer Bonanni & Rivers Files Lawsuits Against Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and Deputies Alleging Refusal to Act in Tragic Deaths of Monica Cannady and Her Two Children
Pitt McGehee Palmer Bonanni & Rivers has filed lawsuits on behalf of the family of Monica Cannady, a Pontiac mother who, along with her two young sons, tragically froze to death in a field after Oakland County sheriff’s deputies refused to intervene despite multiple warnings from concerned citizens in January 2023.
Attorneys Megan Bonanni and Kevin Carlson, along with Dean Elliott of The Law Offices of Dean Elliott PLC, represent the Cannady family in the lawsuits, which allege that deputies responded with indifference, racial bias, and gross negligence, directly leading to the deaths of Cannady and her sons, Malik Milton, 3, and Kyle Milton, 9. The only survivor, Cannady’s then 10-year-old daughter, awoke next to her deceased loved ones on January 15, 2023.
Several news outlets including the Detroit Free Press, CBS Detroit, and The Detroit News, have reported on this heartbreaking case, exposing body camera footage showing one deputy dismissing the welfare check as a "dumb a-- welfare check" and referring to the children as "f---ing dumb a-- kids." The lawsuit contends that the deputies' refusal to take action cost three lives.
