PMPBR Teams Up with National Center for Lesbian Rights and Equality Michigan to Protect LGBTQ+ Youth from Conversion Therapy

Pitt McGehee Palmer Bonanni & Rivers is proud to team up with the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Equality Michigan in the fight against the harmful practice of conversion therapy. As the largest civil rights organization advocating for LGBTQ+ residents in Michigan, Equality Michigan played a pivotal role in supporting the state's statute that protects LGBTQ+ youth from these dangerous and dehumanizing pseudo-scientific "treatments."

For over a decade, federal courts have consistently upheld laws that shield minors from the severe physical and mental harm caused by attempts to change their sexual orientation or gender identity. Except for a single outlier opinion, courts across the country have recognized that these laws do not violate the First Amendment’s speech or religion clauses.

Supporting Equality Michigan and the National Center for Lesbian Rights as local counsel in this matter, we are dedicated to preventing any attempts to roll back these crucial protections. Michigan’s law is grounded in a long tradition of state regulation of medical practice, ensuring that healthcare professionals adhere to standards that prioritize the well-being of their patients, particularly vulnerable youth. This law specifically targets the harmful conduct of conversion therapy, safeguarding minors from practices proven to be extremely detrimental to their well-being.

Pitt McGehee Palmer Bonanni & Rivers is committed to fighting for justice and supporting the LGBTQ+ community, particularly the youth at risk of being subjected to these harmful practices. We stand firm in our resolve to uphold Michigan’s protections and to continue advocating for the health, safety, and dignity of all individuals.
